||The predecessor of Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IPE-CAS) was Institute of Chemical Metallurgy (ICM). In 1950s, Ye Zhupei, CAS member (1902-1971) proposed to apply chemical engineering principles to intensify metallurgical process. Upon the approval of State Council, ICM was founded on 1958. Under the leadership of CAS members, Mooson Kwauk and Chen Jiayong, the institute further extended the application of chemical engineering principles to the areas of resources and environment, energy resources and materials manufacturing in 1970s, promoted the interdisciplinary studies of chemical engineering and biochemical technology in 1980s and enforced the research on industrial and engineering chemistry in 1990s. The research fields extended from initial chemical metallurgy to current process engineering. The institute changed its name formally from ICM to IPE in 2001 with the approval of the State Commission for Public Sector Reform.
IPE proposes the development strategy of "Greening and Informatization of Process Engineering" and a research framework called "One Core and Four Aspects" to meet the strategic demands of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, which means taking spatial multi-scale structure discipline as a core, making a systematic study on process engineering in 4 aspects: common problems and methodology, database and computation platform, process technology and engineering application to resolve critical technical problems in process engineering, promote transformation of research achievements to industrial application and set up a process engineering platform for the conversion and production of high-efficiency clean resources. The research framework is a living and open system aiming at putting the strategic objectives into practice. It will break down the barriers brought by the disintegrated R&D Design-Engineering system, promote industrialization of laboratory achievements, and produce new technology, process/equipment and technical integration for high-efficiency clean mass conversion, which will drive the technical upgrade of process industry, even the fundamental reform of production mode.
The major laboratories of IPE are: National Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering and National Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology (Beijing), State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Complex Systems, National Engineering Laboratory for Hydrometallurgical Cleaner Production Technology, Key Laboratory of Green Process and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhongguancun Open Laboratory of Process Engineering and five Research Centers for Process Engineering, Biomass, Cyclic Economy, Process Pollution Control and Solar Energy, respectively.
